How does Smash work?
The information, in the form of interviews with witnesses, comes in a continuous stream from the Internet. It is disjointed, out of sequence and sometimes puzzling. The task is to make sense of the data to construct a working hypothesis that explains what happened and which includes all the facts.

The children work in groups as Accident Investigators. Each group receives and interprets the messages revealing information about the accident piece by piece. In the process of organising the data and working out what DID happen, children become very involved. There is argument and discussion: theories are formed and theories challenged.

At the end of the lesson, each group of investigators mounts a short presentation to the Chief of Police, detailing their conclusions and making recommendations on changes to road layout or traffic control that might reduce accidents.

How can I organise Smash for my pupils?
In order for Smash to work, at least one computer must be connected to the Internet. If using a sole computer, this should be linked to a printer. As each message arrives it will be printed out and shared as necessary.

If an Internet linked computer suite is available, children can read messages directly on the screen.

If your Internet linked computer is some distance from your discussion area, assign some pupils (one from each group) as 'runners' to collect and distribute information.

How can I organise my pupils for Smash?
Smash is essentially a vehicle to promote and develop high order communication skills. It is vital that children are grouped with this in mind. If possible, children should be away from a computer with one group member responsible for collecting information at regular intervals.

Smash is a flexible program and can be used with one small group, or indeed with many small groups spread around the school or classroom collecting information from a central area.

If pupils are in an Internet linked ICT suite, children should still work in groups and areas for discussion should be available.

How long does Smash take?
Essentially there are 10 messages delivered at five minute intervals. A 10 minute preparation task and 30 minute follow up task should be added to your time allocation. Actis suggest a morning session of at least 1 hr, preferably 1 hr 30 mins with other curricular activities linked to Smash after the break, up until lunch. However, Smash is designed to be flexible and fit into your timetable.
