Rules (writing comprehension)
After discussing and exploring some of the safety issues around Smash, children should draw up a list of appropriate rules about bicycle safety.
Ask them to consider how many rules would be effective.
How should these rules be phrased? Identify key words and phrases which could be used i.e. always, when ..., wear (safety items), look, etc.
How could these rules be presented? Should any particular words or phrases be highlighted in some way? (Spend your word and sentence level time collating words and phrases for a class bank.)
Before the children complete their presentation of rules, they should consider who the rules are for. If possible, create two different versions, one to deliver to younger children (years two and three) and another to suit their own age group. Use word and sentence level time to emphasise language changes, also discussing the format of the presentation (size of font, any underlining and emboldening, headings and sub headings).
This is an excellent opportunity to use ICT with literacy. Children should use a Desk Top Publishing package, or a package they can move text boxes and image boxes around in to produce their safety rule presentation.
