During the message stream, the teacher is free to observe pupils and assess their speaking and listening skills. These will become evident as pupils take on roles within their groups.

After the message stream, groups are invited to present their report, citing evidence to support their arguments and reasoning.

Use the following as guidelines to assess your pupils; your English department will also have a policy on how to mark your pupils which should be consulted in conjunction with this guide.

Assessment of speaking and listening task
The more able students will be able to do most or even all of these things

Speaking

  • speak clearly and with appropriate volume
  • explain a complex issue
  • describe an issue or situation with appropriate detail
  • adjust vocabulary and register appropriately for the audience intended
  • pass information on accurately and efficiently
  • share a point of view
  • persuade others
  • respond to others' viewpoints
  • include others in conversation, group work

Listening

  • give close attention to what is being said
  • refer to what has been said
  • pick up on points others have made
  • take turns and defer to others
  • encourage others' participation
  • acknowledge others' viewpoints

Pupils performing at a satisfactory level will be able to do some or all of these:

Speaking

  • speak sufficiently clearly and audibly for others in the group to be able to follow without difficulty
  • explain a straightforward issue
  • describe an issue or situation in clear outline and able to refer to some aspects in detail
  • have a sound command of vocabulary
  • have an awareness of a variety of registers
  • pass information on in a simple way
  • explain his/her own point of view
  • persuade others in a simple way
  • reply to others' viewpoints in a simple way
  • sometimes include others in conversation, group work

Listening

  • give attention to what is being said
  • refer to parts of what has been said
  • pick up on some points others have made in a simple way
  • take turns
  • sometimes encourage others' participation
  • show an awareness of others' viewpoints

Pupils peforming at the lower end of the range will be able to do some of the following

Speaking

  • speak sufficiently clearly and audibly for others in the group to be able to follow some of the time
  • explain an issue in outline
  • describe an issue or situation in outline although will encounter difficulty with detail
  • have a limited command of vocabulary
  • pass simple matters of information on
  • explain his/her own point of view in limited terms
  • occasionally persuade others in a simple way
  • reply to others' in a simple way
  • sometimes show an awareness of others in conversation, group work
Listening
  • give limited attention to what is being said
  • pick up on some points others have made in a simple way
  • occasionally take turns
  • show an awareness of others
