Mine Reference: 0 metres/B
I am in the largest building of the pit, the one which houses the main shaft. The wooden walls of the hut are in a reasonable state of repair. Everywhere is covered by a layer of coal dust. The walls, floor and windows are all black. This is to be expected as coal is brought up the mine day in and day out.
The barrier around the mouth of the shaft has to have an opening on one side to allow the tubs to be wheeled on and off the platform rails. A warning notice must be put up here to remind miners to keep well away from this open part of the shaft mouth.
The Banksman has taken one of my brass checks to add to the miners checks on his board. The other check in my pocket will be handed to him when I come back to the surface; he will then know I have returned. My oil lamp is lit ready for inspection and I also have a Davy lamp to provide warning of dangerous gases.
I can go East
or Down.
